What You Need to Know
The USABO tests knowledge across all major areas of biology. While the Open Exam covers breadth, the Semifinal dives deep into all topics. Master these areas:
| Area | Topics | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Molecular Biology | DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene regulation, recombinant DNA | ~20% |
| Cell Biology | Cell structure, organelles, cell cycle, signaling, membrane transport | ~15% |
| Genetics & Evolution | Mendelian genetics, population genetics, phylogenetics, speciation | ~20% |
| Anatomy & Physiology | Organ systems, homeostasis, neural, cardiovascular, respiratory | ~15% |
| Plant Biology | Photosynthesis, plant anatomy, hormones, reproduction, ecology | ~10% |
| Ecology & Behavior | Ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles, population dynamics, ethology | ~10% |
| Biochemistry | Proteins, enzymes, metabolism (glycolysis, Krebs, ETC), carbohydrates, lipids | ~10% |
Weights are approximate based on historical exam analysis. The Semifinal may shift emphasis.
